On Saturday, March 7, some of the nation’s most promising young football talent gathered in Gardner, Kansas for the YAA Kansas City Elite Camp, part of the nationally recognized You Are Athlete (YAA) camp series. Hosted at Gardner Edgerton High School, the event brought together hundreds of elite prospects from across the country for a full day of competition, evaluation, and opportunity.

The camp was divided into two sessions designed to highlight talent at different stages of development. The middle school session, which began at 8:00 AM, featured 150 of the top-ranked young athletes from across the region and beyond. Later in the day, the high school session kicked off at 11:30 AM, welcoming 200 of the nation’s top high school prospects to the field.

Athletes traveled from multiple states—including talent-rich football areas like Florida—to participate in the event, demonstrating the growing national reputation of the YAA camp series. The camps have become a major platform for young athletes looking to gain exposure, sharpen their skills, and compete against some of the best players in their class.

Throughout the day, players were evaluated through a series of drills designed to test speed, agility, position skills, and football IQ. Athletes were divided into positional groups where they worked through individual and competitive drills before eventually coming together for live competition periods and team-style scrimmages. These game-like moments gave scouts and evaluators the opportunity to see how players performed under pressure and within real football situations.

One of the most exciting elements of the camp was the selection process for the YAA Super Showcase. At the conclusion of evaluations, the Top 5 athletes from each group earned invitations to advance to the national Super Showcase in Houston, Texas, where top performers from every region will compete on an even bigger stage in front of college coaches and football scouts.

The Kansas City stop marked the third year the event has been hosted in Gardner, continuing to grow in size and prestige. The camp was organized with support from former NFL running back Leon Washington, who has been instrumental in helping elevate the event and its reach. By bringing elite camps to cities like Gardner, Washington and the YAA organization are helping provide opportunities for young athletes who may not otherwise have access to national recruiting exposure.

The event was also sponsored by Shock Doctor, a leading brand in sports performance and protection equipment. Their involvement highlights the increasing professional support behind youth development events like YAA, which are designed not only to showcase talent but also to promote athlete safety and performance.

For many athletes, camps like YAA are about more than competition. They serve as a gateway to visibility, allowing players to put their skills on display in front of coaches, scouts, and national media. With hundreds of players on the field and only a select few earning advancement opportunities, every drill and every rep mattered.

By the end of the day in Gardner, the field had hosted 350 of the country’s most determined young football prospects, all chasing the same goal: the chance to prove they belong among the nation’s best.

As the camp series continues across the country, the Kansas City stop once again proved why the You Are Athlete camp series has become one of the premier stages for the next generation of football talent.
