Morgan State Makes History: First HBCU to Launch Division I Acrobatics and Tumbling

In a groundbreaking move, Morgan State University has etched its name in history as the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to offer acrobatics and tumbling as a Division I scholarship sport. The initiative, spearheaded by Bears head coach Regina Smith, marks a significant stride towards diversifying athletic opportunities and promoting inclusivity in collegiate sports.

Regina Smith, known for her success in building a Division III program from scratch, brings her expertise to launch this pioneering program at Morgan State.

The university, in addition to introducing acrobatics and tumbling, has also expanded its sports offerings by including a wrestling team, ensuring compliance with Title IX standards.

Football, acrobatics, and tumbling hold a unique distinction as American sports originating at the college level, as highlighted by Baltimore Banner. The recognition of acrobatics and tumbling as an NCAA-sanctioned sport in 2020 has led to a growing number of programs across Divisions I-III, with approximately 60 programs and counting. The establishment of a team at Stevenson University in 2021 further emphasizes the sport's increasing popularity.

Coach Smith has carefully selected 20 incoming freshmen from various parts of the U.S. to form the inaugural team at Morgan State. Complementing these new recruits are former cheerleaders, gymnasts, and athletes already on campus.

The team comprises three young women on full scholarships, 21 members with partial scholarships, and five walk-ons.

As the team gears up for its first season, Coach Smith reflects on the historic significance of this moment. She contemplates the opportunities and education denied to her ancestors, emphasizing that this venture is creating history that may only fully resonate in the years to come.

The establishment of acrobatics and tumbling at Morgan State not only provides new athletic avenues for students but also contributes to the broader narrative of inclusion and diversity in collegiate sports. The university's pioneering step sets the stage for future HBCUs to explore and expand their athletic programs, fostering a more comprehensive and representative landscape in the world of collegiate athletics.
